New Zealand recognizes the following relationships as legitimate partnerships:• Married couples who hold a Marriage Certificate and live together• De facto couples who live together but are not legally married• Same-sex couples who hold a Marriage Certificate and live together
1, Marriage or partnership with a New Zealand Citizen or ResidentYou may apply for a Partnership Work Visa or a Partnership Visitor Visa.Once granted, an Open Work Visa allows you to work in any field in New Zealand.
Policy Overview
The couple must have met in person and lived together for at least several months.The New Zealand citizen or resident must not have sponsored or been sponsored for another partner in the past 4 years.Applicants must proactively provide as much documentation as possible to prove the authenticity and stability of the relationship.If applying for residence while in New Zealand, the applicant must hold a valid visa.
If the visa has expired, the applicant must either submit a Section 61 request or apply from their home country.
For couples who have recently married or started living together, or who have complex marital histories, Immigration NZ may conduct an interview to assess the genuineness of the relationship.Interviews can last from 20 minutes to 1–2 hours and cover many aspects of daily life. Inconsistent answers may result in a visa refusal, so thorough preparation is essential.

Evidence of Living together include:• Child’s birth certificate (if applicable)• Joint bank account statements• Mail addressed to the same residence• Photos together at different stages• Correspondence and chat screenshots• Rental agreements• Shared bills• Proof of joint property or asset purchases• Letters of support from parents or friends• Other living together evidence
